Stay & Play Saturday Brings LEGOs and Locomotives to Kennesaw
Southern Museum pairs free family play with PeachLUG's brick-building station on October 24

Searching for the best restaurants in Kennesaw, GA, can lead you straight to the familiar chains along the main roads.

But the more interesting dining itinerary mixes downtown favorites, neighborhood gathering spots and a barbecue counter worth planning around.

These five Kennesaw restaurants offer different reasons to go out, whether you need a casual family meal, an easy lunch or a relaxed date night.

1. 1885 Grill — Southern coastal food downtown

At 1885 Grill on South Main Street, the draw is a Southern coastal menu in the heart of downtown Kennesaw.

Its published dinner menu includes shrimp and grits, fried flounder, Southern fried chicken and steak options.

That range makes it a flexible choice when one person wants seafood and another is in the mood for comfort food.

For a date night, combine dinner with a stroll through downtown, and check the restaurant's preferred-seating guidance before you go.

2. Big Shanty Smokehouse — A barbecue-focused local stop

Near historic downtown, Big Shanty Smokehouse leans into hickory-smoked meats, ribs, brisket, smoked chicken and hearty sides.

The restaurant highlights its barbecue heritage and house sauces, making it an appealing pick when your group wants a meal built around the smoker.

Its posted schedule lists limited weekly opening days, so check hours before leaving home.

Organizers recommend arriving early, wearing closed-toe shoes, and bringing water because the walking path crosses uneven ground under the tree canopy. Space is limited to keep the group small and unhurried, so we strongly encourage early sign-up for anyone hoping to attend.

The session wraps up by late morning, leaving time afterward to explore the rest of the gardens' permanent collection on the same ticket. General garden admission runs $10 for adults outside of ticketed programs like this one; members get in free. For questions about accessibility or group accommodations, contact Smith-Gilbert Gardens directly at (770) 919-0248.

The 9:30 start is nice if your kids are up early like mine. We can see the locomotives before the morning is over.

Ben H.Exactly. Mine are usually ready for lunch by noon, so that start time works for us.

I had no idea they did Stay & Play on the fourth Saturday most months. Going to keep an eye out for the next theme too.

Yes, Stay & Play Saturday returns on the fourth Saturday of most months, with a different theme each time. Thanks for following along!

Tasha M.I missed that too. It'll be fun to see what theme they pick next month.

No registration is a relief. It's hard to commit to a Saturday morning plan with two little ones.

Robert EllisSame here. Being able to decide that morning makes outings with little kids much easier.

Does anyone know if the brick station has bigger pieces for little kids? Glad there's a craft table either way.

kim_87I'm wondering the same thing. The article doesn't say what size bricks they'll have, but the craft table sounds like a good backup.

We don’t have details on the brick sizes PeachLUG will bring, but the craft table near the lobby offers another option for younger children.

We went to the Southern Museum last year and my daughter still talks about the trains. The LEGO theme might get us back this weekend.

We love hearing that the trains made such an impression! This Saturday’s LEGO theme sounds like a fun reason to visit again.

Jenna P.If she still talks about the trains, she'd probably have a great time building some too.

Sounds fun, but admission adds up pretty fast for a family of four. I wish they had a family rate for these Saturday events.

Dave ThompsonAgreed. Two adults and two kids would be $30, so a family rate would help.

We understand how admission can add up for a family. This event is included with regular admission, and children 2 and under get in free.

My son would spend the whole morning at the PeachLUG brick station. Getting him to leave by 12:30 might be the hard part.

Maria G.I can picture that. You might have to give him a ten-minute warning before it's time to go.

That sounds like a good problem to have! The PeachLUG brick station is part of the fun until the event wraps up at 12:30 p.m.
